PLANNING FOR FUTURE UPGRADES AT BORONIA STATION

10 November 2021

Investigative works are set to begin at one of Melbourne’s busiest railway stations, Boronia Station, to plan for future upgrades.

The Andrews Labor Government’s $500,000 investment will enable the exploration of potential accessibility and facility improvements at Boronia Station and support the revitalisation of the suburb.

Boronia Station is on the Belgrave Line, located next to the major activity centre – a hub for local business and a number of health and community services.

It was rebuilt as a below ground station in 1998 as part of a grade separation project to remove the nearby Boronia Road level crossing.

A recent online survey asking commuters to rate their local station, found that the top issues for passengers at the station was safety and cleanliness.

Planning will look at integrating facility and accessibility improvements at Boronia Station with the broader Station precinct.

It will include ways to improve cleanliness, safety (CCTV and lighting), platform canopies, toilet refurbishments, platform accessibility, and information displays.

The investigation at Boronia is part of a broader Labor Government initiative to upgrade train stations across the state, and is on top of the Better Stations Initiative, which is providing $20.3 million in stimulus funding to upgrade 16 stations.

The upgrades will also support and create jobs as we continue on the road to economic recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

Planning for a future upgrade at Boronia Station is part of the Government’s Public Transport Accessibility and Amenity Upgrades initiative.

“This is a massive win for community who’ve told me since day one that we need a better Boronia Station and I’m stoked that this will start that planning work. The station is a pivotal part of the future of a growing and modern Boronia and I’m excited to be getting on with it.”
